Mr. Joel Irungu is an accomplished reinsurance professional with over 15 years of experience spanning claims management, retrocession, reinsurance underwriting and technical accounting. He joined Kenya Reinsurance Corporation in 2017 and has held several leadership positions within the Corporation, including Assistant Manager – Reinsurance Claims, Head of Technical Accounts and Claims Analysis, and Assistant Manager – International Reinsurance Underwriting.

Throughout his career, Mr. Irungu has demonstrated strong technical and strategic leadership in managing complex claims, enhancing claims controls, strengthening recoveries and supporting the optimisation of the Corporation’s retrocession programme. His experience in international treaty and facultative business has broadened his understanding of global reinsurance markets and strengthened the integration of claims insights into underwriting and risk-management decisions.

He holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of East London, a Postgraduate Diploma and Bachelor of Science degree in Actuarial Science from the University of Nairobi, and a Diploma in Insurance from the Chartered Insurance Institute, United Kingdom. He is also a Certified Trustee and has undertaken executive leadership development at Strathmore University Business School.

Mr. Irungu is a trainer with the Kenya Re Training Academy and has represented the Corporation at various regional and international insurance and reinsurance forums. He brings to the role a results-driven leadership approach, strong stakeholder-management capabilities and a commitment to prudent claims management, effective retrocession recoveries and operational excellence.
